A nice piece of an extremely rare Danzig medal. In this variety, the medal has not appeared on the auction market for years.
Background flaws.
A donation medal minted in Gdansk perhaps on the occasion of a royal visit. The obverse of the coronation medal listed at Raczynski's under item 193 was used for its minting.
Obverse: antique bust in laurel wreath and mantle to the right, in the rim legend:
IOAN.III D.G.REX POL.M.D.L.RUS.PRUSS;
Reverse: panorama of Gdansk, lower the city coat of arms in a cartouche supported by lions, higher an eagle with outspread wings. Above the whole an all-seeing eye in clouds with rays. In the rim the legend:
NUMINIS ATQUE AQUILAE GEDANUM MUNIMINE TUTUM.
Silver, diameter 41 mm, weight 16.8 g.
