Bydgoszcz orth with excellent provenance.
Illustrated in Dariusz Pączkowski's online catalog, moreover, the obverse was used in Igor Szatalin's latest publication (p.115)!
A select, beautifully preserved piece.
Excellent presentation, great luster, minor sheet imperfections and delicate scratches on the obverse.
A very rare type of orta with the name of the city of Bydgoszcz in the legend and the numerals 2-1 and the letters C-G on the sides of the reverse's shield of arms. The piece on display is a 21-grosz issue, minted under the universal of January 14, 1651, cancelled just a month later on February 24. Its effect was to raise the value of the orta from 18 to 21 pennies, which was reflected on this type of orta (numerals 2-1).
Due to the shortness of the mintage, this issue is today one of the rarest among the John Casimir orts.
Valued in Tyszkiewicz's catalog at 24 marks in gold.
Obverse: bust of the ruler in a laurel wreath, to the right, in the rim the legend:
Reverse: crowned five-field escutcheon with the coats of arms of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Sve:Vasa, on its sides the initials C-G and the denomination mark 2-1, in the rim the legend punctuated by the Wieniawa coat of arms:
CIVITAT:BIDG-OSTIENS:1651;
One of the few chances to purchase such a superb piece. In our opinion one of the most beautiful pieces on the collector's market.
For the best collections!
