Coin from the collection of Mrs. E.E. Clain-Stefanelli. . Bithynia is a land on the Black Sea, in the northwestern part of Asia Minor. An independent kingdom was established there in 297 BC. Gradually dependent on Rome turned into its province. The city of Nicea was located on the shores of a lake, about 40 km from Propontis. It was founded by the Thracians in the 7th century BC. Originally named Ancore, Antigonos demolished the city in 316 and named it Antigoneia. He renamed it Lysimachos once more, naming it after his wife Nikai.
