An impressive Lower Silesian brakteat from the Wroclaw mint, extremely rare in the trade.
Absent from the large brakteat collection sold by GN Marciniak in 2020.
The piece shows the head in profile, under an arcade flanked by turrets with floral motifs.
In the upper part of the arch the inscription S.C. IOHS (St. John), at the bottom B lily A (from Baptista - Baptist).
Initially attributed to Boleslaw the Tall, but recently one can read (Witold Garbaczewski):
"The coin was once thought to be an issue of the Bishops of Wroclaw, due to, among other things, the lily motif, which may act here as a symbol of the archbishopric, and the name of John the Baptist, patron of the Wroclaw cathedral. Recently, however, attention has been drawn to the fact that Henry the Bearded held this saint in particular esteem."
An occidental piece, with beautiful luster and an extremely charming, multicolored, cabinet-like patina throughout.
The most beautiful piece of its type to appear on the domestic auction market, in our opinion.
An absolute rarity, especially in such excellent condition - for the finest collections!
Obverse: In the arcade the head of St. John to the left, arabesques on the sides, above the arcade the inscription S IOHS, below B the lily of A.
