Description du lot
État de conservation: XF
Littérature: RIC 776 VAR, Alfoldi 073.032

Extremely rare variant with the mark of 5th officina ("E") situated in field, above horses' heads, instead of in the exergue as usual.

Sol was the favorite and most frequently depicted God of the Roman pantheon in Probus' coinage. There are numerous variants of reverses with Sol; however the depiction of Sol in quadriga (left or central/spread) remains undoubtedly an iconic, classis reverse for Probus . This reverse type was struck in Lugdunum, Rome, Ticinum, Siscia, Serdica and Kyzikos mints, with each mint having its unique style

OBVERSE: IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG
REVERSE: SOLI INVICTO = Sol in spread (central) quadriga, holding whip
BUST TYPE: H2 = radiate bust left in consular robe, holding sceptre surmounted by eagle (scipio)
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: -/E//XXI
WEIGHT 3.99g / AXIS: 12h / DIAMETER: 20-21mm
